SALEM, Ore. – The Mt. Emily wolf pack is at it again. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife reports the pack killed another sheep, which is the third act of depredation by the wolves this summer.
What remained of the sheep was found Saturday near a nightly bedding ground on public land on Nine Mile Ridge in Umatilla County. ODFW investigators say the animal was dragged to its final location and was largely consumed.

Bite patterns were reported to be consistent with wolves. In addition, one of the pack’s radio-collared wolves was recorded to be about a quarter mile from the dead sheep the night the sheep was killed. ODFW has confirmed kills by the pack’s wolves on June 22 and Aug. 4 as well.

With three strikes against the pack, one more act of depredation by Dec. 22 will mean the state could consider taking lethal action against the pack. New ODFW rules, the result of a court battle by environmentalists, state that lethal action cannot be taken unless a pack records four or more incidents of depredation within a six-month window.
