Wolves kill hunting dog in Barnes

Superior Telegram

Wolves killed a bear hound in the town of Barnes on Sunday.

The Wisconsin DNR confirmed that the 5-year-old bear hunting dog was killed by wolves. A four-mile buffer zone has been set up around the depredation site. Although most of the caution area is Bayfield County forest lands, a small area of Douglas County is also included.

To date, seven dogs have been killed and two injured by wolves in Wisconsin this year, all of them hunting dogs. Sunday’s attack took place about two miles away from a site where wolves injured a bobcat hound, also in the town of Barnes, on Jan. 10.

More information on state depredations and buffer zones is available online at dnr.wi.gov/topic/wildlifehabitat/wolf/dogdeps.html.
