More than 1,400 people visited the St. Francis Wolf Sanctuary in Montgomery Saturday and had the opportunity to pet and have their photo taken with the sanctuary’s ambassador, Romulus. Romulus is considered a “low content” wolfdog, which refers to the amount of wolf he has in him, according to officials with the sanctuary The sanctuary invited the public out to view the wolves and wolfdogs during its annual open house and silent auction fundraiser.

Volunteer Leslie Guillermo, of Montgomery, works with animals on a daily basis, as a professional pet concierge with pet shuttle service. She started volunteering at the wolf sanctuary in January. “It hasn’t been long, but I love it,” Guillermo said.

SFWS Manager Christie Stryk, who lives in Spring, was busy feeding the wolves and wolfdogs frozen meat popsicles for lunch and educating the public about them. “We’ve had a steady stream of people all day, just fabulous,” Stryk said. “We haven’t seen a lull at all.”

Stryk took time to educate attendees about why each animal came to the sanctuary. “We have two pure wolves, eight wolfdog mixes and then we have three pure dogs that were either mislabeled at a shelter as being part wolf or misrepresented by a breeder as being a wolf,” Stryk said.

Stryk came to the wolf sanctuary from the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage before being transferred back to Texas. “I just fell in love with the species there and knew that I had to have wolves in my life,” Stryk said.

The St. Francis Wolf Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization. Visits to the facility are by appointment only. To sponsor, donate or volunteer at the St. Francis Wolf Sanctuary, call 936-597-WOLF (9693) or email info@wolvesofsaintfrancis.org.
