Wolf remains at large in Franklin County

FRANKLIN COUNTY • The sheriff’s department is searching for a wolf that killed a dog early Saturday about a mile from where the wolf got loose in the Robertsville area on Monday.

Sheriff officials received a call about 1:30 a.m. about a sighting of the wolf. Around the same time, a resident on Jenny Lane who lives near where the wolf escaped reported that her dog was missing. The dog’s body and the wolf were found at a nearby residence. The owner of the wolf was contacted, and he attempted to capture it but failed.

Anyone who spots the wolf should not approach it, authorities said. Instead, they are asked to contact the sheriff’s department at 636-583-2560.

On Sunday, two gray timber wolves escaped from a cage at a residence in the 800 block of Moon Light Trail near Robertsville. One of the wolves was shot and killed by a homeowner on Wardfield Road Monday when he saw the animal in a pen with some of his sheep, police said.

The wolf on the loose weighs between 100 to 150 pounds and is normally not aggressive, authorities have said

Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke said homeowners can own exotic animals if they have a special permit. It appears the owner had the proper paperwork, he said. It is unclear why the man had wolves.
