SD Wolf-kill bill gets OK, in case animals show

PIERREThe Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee voted unanimously to send to the Senate floor legislation that puts wolves in the crosshairs if the federal government ever delists them as a protected species in western South Dakota.

Senate Bill 205, sponsored by Sen. Mike Vehle, R-Mitchell, acknowledges the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has primary management authority for wolves. The bill looks to a day when the federal government may cede wolf management West River to South Dakota.

Vehle and Department of Game Fish and Parks Wildlife Division Director Tony Leif pointed to wolf recovery in Minnesota and in Montana and Wyoming prompting the federal government to allow states to manage the species.

Wolves were listed as endangered in 1978. But the species has recovered so well in Minnesota, wolves were delisted East River and management authority was turned over to the state last year, because this portion of South Dakota is included in the Minnesota region.
